If you own an older home in Rhode Island, there’s a good chance your electrical service wasn’t designed for the amount of electricity a modern household uses today.
Between central air conditioning, mini-splits, electric dryers, ranges, hot tubs, EV chargers, generators, and all of the electronics we use every day, an older 100-amp service can sometimes become limiting.
At MXM Electric, one of the most common questions we hear from homeowners is: “Do I really need to upgrade to 200 amps?”
The answer depends on your home, your existing electrical system, and what you plan to add in the future.
What Is a 200-Amp Service?
Your electrical service determines how much electrical capacity is available to your home.
Many older Rhode Island homes still have 100-amp electrical services. While a 100-amp service can be perfectly adequate for some homes, larger homes and homes with more electric appliances may benefit from a 200-amp service.
A 200-amp service provides additional capacity and can make it easier to accommodate modern electrical loads and future upgrades.
Signs You May Need an Electrical Service Upgrade
You may want to have your electrical service evaluated if:
Your home currently has a 60-amp or 100-amp service.
You are installing an EV charger.
You are adding central air conditioning or mini-splits.
You are installing a hot tub or pool equipment.
You are switching from gas appliances to electric appliances.
You are adding an electric range or dryer.
You are planning an addition or major renovation.
Your existing electrical panel is full or outdated.
You frequently experience electrical issues or tripped breakers.
That doesn’t automatically mean you need a 200-amp service. A proper electrical load calculation can help determine whether your existing service has enough capacity.
What Is Involved in a 200-Amp Service Upgrade?
A service upgrade is more involved than simply replacing the electrical panel.
Depending on the home, the project can include replacing or upgrading the meter equipment, service entrance conductors, electrical panel, grounding and bonding system, and other components necessary to bring the new installation up to current requirements.
The utility company, electrical permit, and inspection may also be involved in the process.
Every house is a little different, which is why we evaluate the existing service before recommending exactly what needs to be replaced.
Should You Upgrade Before Adding an EV Charger or Hot Tub?
Not necessarily.
Before adding a large electrical load, an electrician can determine the capacity of your existing electrical service and calculate the expected load on the home.
In some cases, there may be enough capacity to install the new equipment without upgrading the service. In others, a service upgrade or another load-management solution may be appropriate.
The important thing is to determine this before installing the new equipment.
Planning for the Future
Even if your current electrical system is meeting your needs, it can make sense to think about what you may add over the next several years.
More homeowners are adding EV chargers, heat pumps, mini-splits, electric appliances, pools, hot tubs, workshops, and standby generators.
If you're already completing a major renovation or replacing an older electrical service, it may be worth considering the additional capacity that a 200-amp service provides.
